What is the Creative Weekend: NEW VOICES?
The NEW VOICES project is a weekend of exploring creating new music for voices and vocal ensemble with Via Nova, a choir made up of some of Birmingham Conservatoire’s top singers.

You will work closely with the other composers on the weekend along with the singers and composition students from the Conservatoire. You will create a new piece of music in the two days that will be performed on Sunday in an informal concert. During the weekend you will:

• Have a new piece rehearsed and performed by a live choir
• Be involved in group composing and actively trying out new ideas
• Share ideas with other young composers and gain instant feedback
• Get 1-2-1 composing tuition
• Hear performances by the choir to give you inspiration
• Learn more about what the voice can do and how to compose for voices
• Explore how text and words can be used with music
• Investigate improvising with the voice
• Try out new way to notate and write music down

Who is the Creative Weekend for?
NEW VOICES is for anyone interested in creating their own music and aged between 13-19. Whether you create songs, write instrumental music, or improvise we want to hear from you! No previous experience in composing for choir or voice is needed – just being your musical ideas and creativity!

We recommend students are based in the Midlands due to travel but are happy to consider students from further afield.

When are the sessions?
Saturday 2 July from 10:00 – 16.00

     and

Sunday 3 July from 10:00 – 17.00 (16:00 performance for family and friends)

You will need to be present for all of both days!

How do I get involved?

We will accept around 20 composers for this Creative Weekend. You need to fill in the application form and send it to birminghamyoungcomposers@gmail.com or by post to Kirsty Devaney, 48 Waterloo Road, Kings Heath, Birmingham, B14 7SD by Friday.
