Like Natalie, James joined us in 2016 for the vocal composing weekend. James composed a wonderful piece involved some elements of freedom where the text was drawn at random for the singers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpRcyAwAZYI
James then composed for large ensemble with a beautiful piece called ‘Journey‘ performed by the Learning and Participation Ensemble. James now studies composition at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.
Here is what James said about his time with YCP:
Kirsty and the team at Young composer’s project are amazing they have been a huge help in my choice to become a composer. I participated in the creative weekend project they held and the full year course. Both times I had a wonderful experience leering a huge amount about instruments and composition as a career choice as well. Due to the incredible guidance from the Young Composers project mentors I was able to create some really interesting sounds and compositions I didn’t expect I could do.
I loved the opportunity to work with other composers and people committed to making new music. The most exciting part of the project for me was the opportunity to work with a large ensemble. This has helped me with my university choice also I am now a first year composition student at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and this exciting project for young composers is an incredible opportunity to see what’s in stall for anyone interested in applying to do composition at a conservatoire.
